Evolution of Textiles

Textiles have evolved from a basic necessity to a must-have accessory. They have been used to protect us from the harsh environment in ancient times. Now they play a part in almost every accessory we own. The industrial revolution made it possible to manufacture these textiles on a large scale, changing the fashion landscape in the process. Let’s take a look at its latest trends down below.

Textiles

Textiles are manufactured using a myriad of natural materials such as cotton, wool, silk, etc. or man-made fibers like polyester. They are usually manufactured using knitting, weaving, or yarning. Some of its uses are medical, clothing, construction, automotive, and transportation.

Man-made fibers account for more than 70% consumption. They are utilized in fillings for sleeping bags, conveyor belts, tires, and winter wear. They are mostly used in conjunction with natural fibers due to their moisture absorption and easy care.

Trends

Spider silk is one of the strongest natural fibers due to its strength. Combined with the fact that it is six times more elastic than Kevlar, it is the must-use material by various fashion brands. The North Face uses a material similar to spider silk for its production of “Moon Parka” jackets.

Bolt Threads, a U.S. company, has finally found an innovative solution to mass-producing spider silk. It is grown using yeast and then spun into spider silk using a production process similar to rayon.

Nanotechnology is being widely used for comfort and style. Materials such as graphene, silver nanowires, and carbon nanotubes are being used for smart textiles and electronic devices. Most of nanotechnology based apparel is primarily targeted at sportspersons to make it odor and dirt resistant. Swiss textile manufacturer Schoeller Textil AG uses this technology for its rainwear. The material mimics the self-cleaning ability of plants, making the user nearly impervious to rain or dirt.

Market Overview

The global textiles market size is expected to touch USD 1.2 trillion by 2025, according to Grand View Research, Inc. It is driven by the global consumption of clothes and other related apparel. Urbanization and rising disposable incomes in Mexico and China are other factors spurring market growth. Silk raw material can expect a 4.6% CAGR from 2016 to 2025.

Fashion & clothing application recorded nearly USD 608 billion in 2015. Transportation application can witness a 4.3% CAGR in revenue from 2014 to 2025. This can be ascribed to utilization of textiles in automotive filters. Some notable market players are Honeywell International, INVISTA, and Asahi Kasei Fibers Corporation.
